2018's Film List [January]

Third year of the recording, here's to a strong one. Here is the INDEX

01. The Tramp (01.01.18)
One of the more famous of Chaplin's works but it passes the test of time. Very funny and I loved lots of small moments. How he doffs his hat at every animal and how the slapstick combines. To accompany the silent film I listens to some music from 'Everybody's gone to the Rapture' very good if not overly fitting to the film.

02. Urusei Yatsura: Only You (05.01.18)
Very of its time, the are similarity's to Ranma 1/2  but under the direction of Oshii it takes on a flare to the animation. I may have to check out the series sometime, but this is the first in my attempt to watch all of Mamoru Oshii's films.

03. Following (06.01.18)
Christopher Nolan's first films and it has many of the aspects that he would become famous for using. The plot works so well and the story twists back and forth bringing everything into line. Small by nature but very good film making.

04. Fear and Desire (07.01.18)
Stanley Kubrick's first film, its about war but damn is it odd. The premise is interesting and the film making for 53 is good but something feels off. It gets better as it goes on but it has a very weak start. Such a bizarre setting and plot but it works and has a interesting thing or two to say about war.

05. A Ghost Story (12.01.18)
What a film that was. So much I could say from the film making to the story to the performances. They are all different and brilliant. I love how the film takes its time, this must of been one hell of a experiment but boy did it pay off. Vary 'artsy' but I love it to bits.

06. Pink Floyd - The Wall (14.01.18)
I has taken me far too long to getting around to watching this film. It also felt like I was watching it for a long time. Compressing a life into 95min but the amount it covers and more importantly how it is covered is remarkable. The is a song in this film that I am going to do a post about and I didn't know it was going to be. Such a good film and the first film performance by Bob Geldof is fantastic.

07. Princess Mononoke (15.01.18)
Widely regarded as one of the best Ghibli films and while I do think it is up there the has always been something about it that seemed off. This time I saw the influences of Akira Kurosawa works and it all made sense. It is a over the top samurai film but with a epic fantasy story and setting. It is a very very good film just one that takes some adjusting to. It looks and sounds great, I need to re-watch some more Ghibli.

08. The Final Cut [short] (17.01.18)
A Pink Floyd film that I didn't' know about. After watching it I don't feel as if I know much more. I recognised the people and the songs but the narrative if the is one is a bit obtuse. Very interesting little film. I'll have to check other peoples thoughts one it.

09. The Animatrix - Program [short] (22.01.18)
Just a few more left to see. Very strong art style and the action evoked the kung Fu films that inspired parts of the trilogy well. A small story that fits well and has a strong pay off.

10.  Monkey Punch no Sekai: Alice (27.01.18)
From the mind of Lupin III comes this over the top... thing? It was trying to be sexy fun even if it was very very sexist. 1991 Japan is something to behold.  I loved the music most but the ride was fun even if a little off the wall.

11. The Animatrix - World Record [short] (28.01.18)
One of the best story's so far coupled with my least favourite animation. I like the art but the deformed animation style doesn't work for me. I love how with just the will to improve you can push yourself out of the reality.

12. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (29.01.18)
Yep again, and I see myself re-watching it this year as I have started reading the Manga. I am only a volume in but tit is very interesting. One thing I pick up more on this time through was the nature of history repeating. M.A.D but by means of nature not nukes. Still one of the all time greats it works on every level.

Wow only one film this month was released recently. Best: NotVotW such a great film. A ghost story was good but not quite at that level.
